What a great Park!

Recently I visited this great Dog Run in Forest Park. This destination park is great for you and your pet week day or week end. It is set along a forested section on the south end of this very large green space in East Queens. Talk about a good way to waste an afternoon at the many attractions around the park.  How about 7 miles of Bridal Trails, or 3 miles of walking trails? The west end of the park includes quite a few sports facilities; basketball, golf, baseball, among others. There is 538 acres to enjoy in this historic park, most accessible by foot. Here is an interactive map for the park. For a detailed history on the park visit the Forest Park info page here.

Ok, now back to the dog run. The dog run is owned by the parks department, but thankfully maintained by a local group called K-9 Corral. Paul Toomey assumes control of improvements and maintenance. They have a group of dedicated volunteers like no other. The K-9 Corral’s “Round Up” Newsletter goes out every month and even features local advertising. So not only does the park enjoy volunteers, but they also garner support from the local businesses.  In the past few years they have managed to get some great things done for the park.

a beautiful entrance

Namely, a stairway to ease access to the hilly dog run, as well as flower boxes, trees, and new fencing. They’ve also put in wood chips and retaining walls to level out the grounds. They have a constant presence in the park, and so the park is very well taken care of and a great place to enjoy an afternoon.

The park has obstacles, several benches for relaxing, and abundant shade for the hot sunny dog days of Summer. I like that they have a functioning double entrance and a small dog run as well.

To join the K-9 Corral Call Paul Toomey at 347-436-6076. Or you can stop by the park, check it out and grab a flier on the way out!
